Seealpsee Berggasthaus is a beautiful must-see stop while hiking the Alpstein trails. Luckily, you can hike to the Seesalpsee Alp House from Säntis Alp (Meglisalp Berggasthaus) or Eban Alp (Äscher Berggasthaus).
The hike down from Meglisalp can be a challenging in one section but is otherwise a normal Alpine path that drops into a forest. The background mountain in the image below is Ebenalp with a cable car and the famous Äscher Berggasthaus. I have not walked the hike down from Äscher but the signs suggest normal hiking conditions. What is not ideal, is the walk down to Wasserauen from Seealpsee. This section is not a trail, rather it’s a very steep paved road which may be better walked up.
Appenzell Innerrhoden: Säntis Alp Hike.
Säntis – Lisengrat – Rotsteinpass (1 Std. 15 Min) Challenging. Rotsteinpass – Meglisalp – Seealpsee – Wasserauen (3 Std. 30 Min) Challenging
The Berggasthaus Seealpsee restaurant is very good and with friendly service. There is plenty of indoor seating and a large sundeck area overlooking the lake and the mountain valley. This is a full guesthouse with nightly rooms, boat rentals, and hiking and fishing opportunities. I saw families with small children as well as many people like me, 6 hours into a hike.
I arrived to Seealpsee late in the day and there were still a lot of people walking around the lake path. Somehow, all those people made it to Seealpsee with enough energy to hike around lake and even rent boats.
On the lake path we passed the local Cheesery, Seealpcäserei. It was closed for the day when we arrived. A family farm and cheese production. In the promotional posting below, notice not one but two photos of the family bathing in a whey bath. I think the sign says that the whey then goes to the cows. The sign also promotes their pig and veal products.
I can easily imagine spending a day along the Seealpsee. I would certainly arrive early enough to eat at the Seealpcäserei and tour their workings. Then go for a swim and relax before another meal at the Seealpsee Berggasthaus.
Säntis Malt WhiskyTrek
Yes, the Seealpsee Berggasthaus participated in the WhiskyTrek. Their entry was finished with a Cognac cask and it was my favorite entry.
